Eating on Purpose

We all know what to do to lose weight. 

We know it, but we don’t necessarily do it. Why? Because we have a human brain.

Our brains are wired to do three things - seek pleasure, avoid pain, and conserve energy. It’s called the Motivational Triad.

That’s why it feels so good to sit on the couch, eat ice cream and watch Netflix. It’s how we’ve evolved. 

And it’s why intellectually we know what we are supposed to do, we just can’t seem to will ourselves to do it. Our brains sabotage us.

The secret to overcoming your brain? Thoughtwork. You have to learn to watch your own brain. You have to learn to pay attention to it’s patterns and habits. And then choose what you want to think on purpose.

In order to break your autopilot behavior once and for all we can’t just muscle through it with willpower, kale salads and a bunch of rules.

When we work with clients on weight loss and body size, it’s just one component of what we call protecting the asset. Because to do everything you do well, to take care of everything and everyone around you - you need to take care of YOU.

You need to notice what your brain is telling you on default and learn to manage your mind.

You actually don’t deserve that cocktail after the day you’ve had. And just because you already blew it digging into those cookies this afternoon doesn’t mean the day needs to turn into a full on dumpster fire.

Listen, if your goal is to take care of yourself differently you don’t deserve the cocktail. And you can begin again NOW. Not tomorrow.

We need to override these talk tracks, these old brain stories to get out of auto pilot. But you need to hear it to notice it, and give yourself the chance to think differently and act differently.

This is a practice we call Eating On Purpose. And it’s like your life preserver keeping you afloat in chaos. Fueling your body consciously starts with noticing your thoughts and managing your mind.
